On November 28, Dean Tang Ke of Zhishan College at Tsinghua University led a delegation of over 20 student representatives on a visit to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representation in China. The exchange further strengthened communication and cooperation between Tsinghua University and UNHCR.

Learning Session
During the visit, the teachers and students watched a thematic video produced by UNHCR, gaining a preliminary understanding of the global refugee situation and the organization’s humanitarian work. Subsequently, Ms. Sophie Muller, UNHCR’s Representative in China, provided a systematic introduction to the agency’s structure, mission, and key work in China. She emphasized that UNHCR remains focused on refugee protection and sustainable development, with particular attention to safeguarding the rights of vulnerable groups such as women and children. Drawing on his knowledge and research into international refugee issues, Dean Tang Ke engaged in an in-depth discussion with Ms. Muller. He highlighted the importance of university faculty and students actively engaging with global topics and fostering cross-cultural understanding.

Dialogue Session
During the interactive session, participants enthusiastically raised questions regarding responses to the global refugee crisis and UNHCR’s working methods. In response to a question about how regional conflicts affect the work of the China Office, Ms. Muller explained that refugee movements are often sudden and localized. UNHCR cooperates with relevant countries to provide assistance and adjusts its strategies dynamically based on actual conditions. Regarding the agency’s core responsibilities, she stated that UNHCR is committed to offering comprehensive support to refugees, including protection, emergency aid, education, and livelihood assistance. It also works to mobilize multiple stakeholders in seeking long-term solutions, helping refugees rebuild their lives and avoid prolonged stay in camps.

Sharing and Discussion
Following this, Mr. Steven O’Brien, External Relations Officer of UNHCR, shared insights into the emotional world of refugees from a literary perspective. He recommended several classic literary works and engaged the teachers and students in a relaxed and thought-provoking dialogue. To conclude the event, Mr. O’Brien presented books and commemorative gifts to Zhishan College on behalf of UNHCR.

Gift Exchange
This visit provided students of Zhishan College with a valuable opportunity for direct dialogue with an international organization. It enhanced their understanding of global refugee issues and further inspired a sense of responsibility toward participating in global governance. Zhishan College will continue to collaborate with relevant departments within the university to expand multi-level and international exchange platforms, thereby helping students broaden their international perspective and enhance their global competence.
